Summary of the project

Discussions about the project started late in 2020. The goal was to update/refresh the website so it accomplished two main goals.

  1. Be accessible to people with disabilities.
  2. Be mobile friendly.

Research

After taking a look at the previous website. I found there were issues with the website. such as:

  • Outdated platform.
  • Heavy use of graphical accents.
  • Not accessible to people with disabilities.
  • Not compatible with mobile or tablet devices.
  • It was slow and takes way to long to load.

Tasks and goals

With the issues presented with the old website, discussions were made to talk about what was needed for website and how to accomplish it. The main goals this project was suppose to accomplished was to:

  1. Be accessible to people with disabilities.
    • WCAG 2.0 standard.
    • Screen reader support.
    • Accessible settings.
  2. Update the website to current coding standards and securing the website.
  3. Have a website that supports mobile and tablet screens.
    • Responsive design.
  4. Have an efficient website that supports high traffic.

During the discussion, some stretch was given for the project

  1. Integrate a membership aspect to the website.
  2. Integrate an eCommerce shop on the site.
  3. Have a better clean way for users to donate to Pride Toronto.
  4. Able to support multiple languages.

The look of the new website to incorporate Pride Toronto’s shift to a more a year-round advocacy organization than the once a year festival. Some examples of sites Pride Toronto was looking at are:

The whole project took 3 months to complete from the start to the end. During this time, the website has changed since the first mock ups after multiple feedback from the members and staff of Pride Toronto.

At the end the website, completed its main goal and them some. It was able to be accessible to members of the public, it was able to be properly viewed on mobile/tablets and lastly it was able to handle high traffic. On top of the the website includes an eCommerce store, a membership site and its able to support multiple languages.
